Thank you for your answer.
Do you have any experience how far a shared hosting can hold WPMU installation? (users, database size, traffic, etc.)

I'm currently using hostgator. Just starting, developing and testing it with a small community, so I think there's no point switching even to a VPS at this time.

Thank you in advance, Elad.

huda,
Yes, the same installation. At that time we didn't have a dedicated server. Now we do and we don't offload things.

Glad to find your post. I am starting a WPMU + buddypress project for local community, and looking for some personal experience notes.

Was that data usage is from a WPMU installation serving a few thousand of blogs as you said in http://www.ringofblogs.com/2008/04/12/off-loading-wpmu-theme-files-to-amazon-s3/?

What about your primary server? Do you use dedicated server?

Barry,
Keep in mind that if you are not planning to update each file when it is uploaded or deleted, you will have to sync S3 from your server. These sync operations may be more expensive since they use many GET requests.

Interesting numbers. Thanks for posting them.
I'm looking to move a large amount of images to S3 as a sort of reverse backup (will be serving from S3 but keeping copies on my server as well initially) but was worried about huge costs - you have reassured me somewhat.
