Tovo GSM/WiFi phone to hit UK Supermarket Tesco

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

If I were a retailer of cellphones in the UK right now, I’d be worried. Tesco, the best-performing supermarket in the country, are set to sell the tovo t450g - no, not a small dog ideal for accompanying you on twister-fuelled journeys, but a combination GSM/WiFi phone. Compare this to the Philips cordless VOIP phones I wrote about earlier today; yes, those two are around half the price of the £169.99 ($323.29) t450g, but the latter adds in cellular capacity meaning you can use the phone anywhere, proper WiFi rather than base-station dependent DECT, automatic switching between WiFi and cellular networks and a built-in camera. Read on for more details on price and features…

Netgear Skype WiFi Phone

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

The SPH101 Skype WiFi Phone is a basic device- it is a wireless mobile phone that allows you to connect to Skype in order to send and receive calls. In addition to being used as one would a normal phone, it can be used for free Skype communications, which is a like instant messaging though you can talk rather than type.

The goal of this product is to separate Skype from the computer. After all, if you are willing to pay a few dollars a month Skype can be a full-fledged phone service but there is no reason why you should have to be stuck at your computer the whole time- a phone like this one is how you get the most out of Skype.

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Yahoo! Messenger and Linksys are announcing the availability of a new dual-mode cordless phone, the Linksys Dual-Mode Cordless Phone for Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (CIT310). The handset gives consumers the flexibility to make and take low-cost Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls using Yahoo! People subscribing to Yahoo! Phone Out can use the cordless phone to make an Internet-based call to any traditional or mobile phone at low rates. With the use of a USB base station, the phone gives people the freedom to take their Yahoo! Messenger with Voice calls away from the PC and into other rooms.

Additionally, people can search for local business information directly from their phone using Yahoo! Local Search. For example, by programming the phone with a local zip code, people are able to search for a local restaurant (or any other local business) and effortlessly call the restaurant with one click.
