Vanderbilt engineers are a key part of the team in an ambitious national effort to advance the field of fluid power, which could lead to reductions in fuel consumption, state-of-the-art rescue robots and new devices to aid people with mobility impairments.
The National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power is funded by a $15 million five-year grant from the NSF, and augmented by $3 million from various industry partners. The center will be directed by the University of Minnesota.
Fluid-power technology encompasses most applications that use liquids or gases to transmit power in the form of mechanical work or pressure. The complexity of these systems ranges from a simple centrifugal pump used to remove water from the basement of a house to sophisticated airplane controls that rely on high-pressure hydraulic systems. Fluid power is a $33 billion industry worldwide. Industry areas include aerospace, agriculture, construction, health care, manufacturing, mining, and transportation.
“Back in the 1950s and 1960s, the United States led the world in fluid-power research, but now Europe and Asia have passed us by,” said Kim Stelson, the director of the new research center and mechanical engineering professor at the University of Minnesota. “We hope that this new center will get us back on track in this growing field.”

Assoma has improved the patented Dry-run Design of its AMX series through a more efficient cooling system. The design of the magnetically driven pump ensures low mechanical loss and therefore high efficiency. The pump made of synthetic and ceramic materials was designed for aggressive media.
Improved dry running, a high hydraulic efficiency and media resistance are the highlights of the new
magnetically driven centrifugal pump series ASV-MAX by ASV Stübbe. The leakage and emission free design is realised in sizes 40×40 und 65×50 for flows up to 39 m³/h and delivery head is up to 34 m.
Using permanent magnets with high energy density allow for a high efficiency. For media that crystallize out ASV Stübbe specially designed the Etching pump. Crystal deposits that build up inside the pump are destroyed by a special labyrinth. In this dry run pump, the shaft crossover into the atmosphere was sealed with a special PTFE lip seal.
For toxic media with special shaft seal requirements the horizontal magnetic drive centrifugal pump MPCHDryRun by Bungartz is a perfect option. The permanently dry running construction is also suitable for solids and gases. The robust, lifetime lubrication rolling bearing and vortex free magnetic drive work independently of the pumped fluid for 3 years without maintenance. Between the back side of the impeller and the shaft bearing there is a labyrinth medium free area filled with barrier gas. This represents a heat barrier with high temperature gradient and therefore ensures low storage temperatures.
NCR by Dickow Dickow Pumpen has remodelled its NCR series and adapted it to the 9th edition of the API 610. The pumps were designed for applications in the chemical, petrochemical and similar industries. Because of a wide ranging materials selection and the possible inclusion of any shaft sealing system according to API 682, these pumps are suitable to deliver almost all media used in these industries. Examples are acids, alkali, chlorinated hydrocarbon, heat transfer oils, fuels, liquid sulphur, plastic fusion, bitumen etc. Worth mentioning is the integrated inducer which realises especially low NPSH values.

LS Industrial Systems is offering its iP5A series of HVAC variable speed drives. The range is specifically designed to cater for building airconditioning systems and centrifugal pump installations, incorporating Metasys and other HVAC orientated protocols. A fan/pump speed reduction of 20% requires only 64% of the full speed load. Similarly, a fan speed reduction of 30% will require only 49% of the rated full speed load.
This square law characteristic makes the use of the standard VSDs uneconomical, as their output stages are designed to handle high overload currents. With the output stage typified for HVAC applications, a significant reduction in drive cost has been made possible. The new LS iP5A range includes all the sought-after protection including short-circuit proofing earth-leakage proofing (on the run), plastic coated circuit boards, etc.

Centrifugal pumps consist of a set of rotating vanes, enclosed within a housing or casing, used to impart energy to a fluid through centrifugal force. The pump has two main parts: a rotating element which includes an impeller and a shaft, and a stationary element made up of a casing (volute or solid), stuffing box, and bearings. Centrifugal pumps operate using kinetic energy to move fluid utilizing an impeller and a circular pump casing. The impeller produces liquid velocity and the casing forces the liquid to discharge from the pump converting velocity to pressure. This is accomplished by offsetting the impeller in the casing, and by maintaining a close clearance between the impeller and the casing at the cutwater. The fluid enters the pump near the center of the impeller and is moved to its outside diameter by the rotating motion of the impeller. The vanes on the impeller progressively widen from the center of the impeller that reduces speed and increases pressure. This allows centrifugal pumps to produce continuous flows at high pressure. By forcing the fluid through without cupping it, centrifugal pumps can achieve a very high flow rate.
Centrifugal pumps are used in many industries. Some of their most common applications /media transferred include: general purpose fluids, pure water, sludge and sewage, slurry, high viscosity fluids, power generation, the paper industry, the petroleum industry, chemicals and corrosives, gravel and solid materials, high temperature materials, and marine applications.
Centrifugal pumps generate flow by using one of three actions: radial flow, mixed flow, and axial flow. These classifications do not rate the performance quality of the pump, they are merely groupings based upon the pump’s action.
Radial flow pumps are centrifugal pumps in which the pressure is developed wholly by centrifugal force. In mixed flow pumps, the pressure is developed partly by centrifugal force and partly by the lift of the vanes of the impeller on the liquid. Axial flow centrifugal pumps develop pressure by the propelling or lifting action of the vanes of the impeller on the liquid.

Centrifugal Pump Information
A centrifugal pump is classified into one of three basic categories The three centrifugal pump categories are radial flow, mixed flow, and axial flow. A radial flow centrifugal pump is a centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed entirely by centrifugal force. A mixed flow centrifugal pump is a centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed partly by centrifugal force and partly by the lift of the impeller on the liquid. The third type of centrifugal pump is the axial flow centrifugal pump. The axial flow pump is a centrifugal pump in which the pressure is developed by the propelling or lifting action of the vanes of the impeller on the liquid. The two main components of a centrifugal pump are the impeller and the volute. The impeller produces liquid velocity and the volute forces the liquid to discharge from the pump converting velocity to pressure.
