Pumps are amazing mechanical devices and an important invention. They are used to move gas or liquid from one pressure are to another pressure area. They are used in a variety of ways from providing water to providing heat to providing energy. Pumps have been around since the 3rd century and are still going strong today.
There are two main categories of pumps: positive displacement pumps and dynamic pumps. Positive displacement pumps have little leakage as they used sealed chambers to force the fluid or gas. Dynamic pumps use momentum to move the fluid or gas and the chambers are not sealed. In these two categories there are various types of pumps.
The following list explains the different types of pumps most commonly found in residential and industrial settings. These are a good representation of the many styles and models of pumps that are manufactured. Most pumps are made for a specific use and that is represented in this list as well.

Goulds Pumps, one of the fluid brands of ITT Corporation, offers a complete line of elastomer lined slurry pumps for the most severe, abrasive services in the mining/mineral processing, power, chemical, and paper industries. The Model SRL is based on the original lined slurry design introduced by ITT A-C Pump nearly a century ago. Offered with a wide variety of extra thick natural and synthetic elastomer liners, the SRL will hold up to the toughest applications.
The SRL is designed for long service life with features such as large diameter shafts for lower deflection, extending MTBF. Hard Ni-Cr coated XH-800 alloy sleeves protect the shaft. Severe duty, oil lubricated bearings and housings are designed to dissipate and lower bearing temperatures for maximum wear. Suction wear plates protect the casing wear areas.

Municipal wastewater represents the largest application in China and in the world. The migration of one billion people in Asia from the countryside to cities is creating huge needs for municipal wastewater treatment plants.
The chemical industry is the second largest application in China and in the world. China is rapidly building its chemical industry.
Power is the third largest application. In 2007 China has become the leading operator of coal-fired power plants in the world. By 2011 it is projected that China will be operating twice the coal-fired capacity of the U.S. and more than all of Europe combined.
China is developing the manufacturing capability to move beyond the standard water pumps to offer pumps for critical applications.
The U.S. will remain the second largest purchaser of pumps even though there will be a slowdown in refining and oil and gas production. Coal-fired power, ethanol and other growth areas will compensate for the segments which are not growing.

Local pump manufacturer Denorco is heavily involved in pump selection and ensures that the right pump for the job is specified.
This can often be a daunting task, but with Denorco’s specially developed ‘select-a-pump’ programme the job is simplified.
The programme was developed by Denorco, and the company put an extensive amount of capital into the development – the programme is now on version 5.90 and is constantly being updated. Denorco product manager Steven Rose tells Mining Weekly this is quite a sophisticated programme for South Africa, and contains an electronic catalogue of all Denorco pumps, including dimensions, performance curves and everything clients need to take into consideration when selecting a pump.
“Type in the actual product you wish to pump (for example water) with its specific gravity, viscosity and flow rate – if you don’t know the system pressure requirement, there is a pipeline module where you can design a pipeline system, and the programme will give you the pressure that your system will require.

When the Vienna Hilton, built in the 1970s, was recently renovated, speed-controlled pumps from ITT Vogel Pumpen were installed. These state-of-the-art pumping systems are delivering significant cost savings in the operation of the hotel’s heating, air-conditioning and water supply systems, says Steve Minett, PhD .
The Hilton hotel in Vienna has under gone a total refurbishment, requiring the building to be closed for one and a half years. The renewed hotel now has 579 modern guest rooms and 45 luxury suites. In addition, the Vienna Hilton can now also offer Austria’s biggest and newest hotel conference hall. This has an area of 830 square meters and can accommodate an audience of 900 people. The hotel has retained its 423-square-meter ballroom and it can now offer an additional 11 other meeting rooms, ranging in size from 60 to 180 square meters. A brand new bar has been added, the gym expanded and the restaurant has been completely re-designed along ultra-modern lines. The works of several Austrian artists have been included in the interior designs. Transportation between the hotel and airport has been dramatically upgraded by a new direct airport shuttle service, CAT, which departs from directly beneath the hotel. The service incorporates flight check-in facilities and the journey time is 14 minutes.

Enerpac’s ZA4-series of high-pressure hydraulic air-driven pumps is designed for in-plant, industrial applications and medium to large construction projects. It claims that its Z-Class pump design offers higher oil flow and bypass pressure – and the potential to improve productivity in any application. Because of their Atex 95 certification, the pumps are safe for use in environments such as refinery, petrochemical and oil & gas processing.
Reservoirs have capacities of 4-40 litres. A sight gauge on the 4- and 8-litre models and a level gauge on the larger reservoirs allow quick and easy oil level monitoring. The manual control valves come with a built-in user adjustable pressure relief valve. Standard models fit most applications, while many custom configurations are available.
The optional heat exchanger warms exhaust air to prevent freezing and cools the hydraulic oil.
Accurate flow
Smartflow is a sensorless flow measurement function that can calculate the flow of a centrifugal pump within 5% of the pump-rated flow – without the need for any external instrumentation. It is fitted as standard on the version 5.0 of Pumpsmart PS200 from ITT.
This function mathematically models the pump power curve with only four points of CDS pump performance curve data: BEP flow, BEP power, shut-off power and rated speed.
There are other new features. Advanced Pump Protection takes into account the hydraulic and mechanical loses associated when changing the speed of a centrifugal pump. A self calibration feature allows for an accurate representation of the pump to ensure it is protected at all speeds.
Positive Displacement Pump Protection (PDPP) is a sensorless function that protects a constant torque load such as a positive displacement pump. Because PDPP is used with constant torque loads it does not take into account changes in speed – as APP does. PDPP monitors for conditions such as high and low torque which can indicate that the pump has a blocked discharge or a starved suction.
